Justin A. Ponce

Welcome SkyVerge Interviewing Team!

Where are you located?

Right now I’m located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I’ve been living here for the past 4 years or so, with an annual trip back to my home in Cupertino, California.

Why are you looking for a new position?

I love front end development and I love helping customers solve their problems. I think the second one is especially important in anything you do. FissionBlue Creative is my freelance brand, and I’m feeling stuck in terms of where I am and where I want to be. I figure joining something bigger than myself, like SkyVerge, is a smart choice.

Can you summarize your remote work experience?

Absolutely. Right now I work remotely while my sole proprietorship is registered in California. I’ve had customers in several states up and down the East and West Coasts. I’ve also served international customers from Malaysia, Singapore, and Brazil. Timezones are always a struggle at first, but with some willpower and a clever sleep schedule, everyone adapts.

What should we definitely look at in your resume/work experience?

Two key skills should stand out from SkyVerge’s point of view:

  1. The right attitude and the enjoyment of helping customers win, and
  2. The necessary skills to achieve this, such as HTML5, CSS3, and some basic knowledge of jQuery/JavaScript.

What’s not on your resume/work experience but you think we should know?

My excitement. I want to work with SkyVerge, because I know this is a fit. I just need to communicate this to the hiring team when (if) I get shortlisted. I have an excellent home internet connection with 100mbps Up/Down fiber.

Can you summarize your HTML/CSS/JavaScript knowledge?

I’ve been throwing together websites for the past 10 years. The first several were admittedly not that great, though I think some practice helps a ton.

Why do you think you’re a good fit for this role?

You work with WooCommerce! This very site uses WooCommerce to sell hosting services for web design customers.

Anything else we should know about you?

I’m a family man! I have a daughter whom I love very much and I have a personal stake in succeeding at SkyVerge.

A Day in the Life Prompt:

Customer: I’m considering switching to Product Customizer. Does your app allow live image previews?

Me: Though we don’t currently offer this feature yet, it’s in the works. Would you like me to add you to our newsletter for new features, so you’ll be the first to know when it’s available?

Fire Alarm Prompt:

Imagine you’ve just started your workday. You login and see a large number of emails from distraught customers. Clearly, something is happening. What steps do you take?

  1. Communicate with teammates who started before me to see if an incident report has already been made.
  2. Get up to speed on the solution, if any has been found yet.
  3. Begin notifying our customers of the situation and the steps we are taking to resolve this. Provide them with any information that can be shared.

Step-by-Step Prompt:

We’d like to get an idea of how you explain concepts and processes. What was the last thing you purchased online? Tell us, step-by-step, how you went about searching, choosing, and completing your purchase:

I needed a way to migrate my WordPress test site to a different domain and server.

I did a quick Google search and found a few options available. After weighing the pros and cons in terms of price and what I needed feature-wise, I decided on UpdraftPlus with the Migrator add-on.

I entered my billing info, chose my payment method, and clicked the Complete Purchase button. I then was redirected to a downloads page where I downloaded the ZIP file. Then I received an email containing my receipt.
